HOW and WHY ARTISTS PAINT - gita lloyd history
Through my years working in the commercial art world as a licensing illustrator I was told by my mentors to keep working on my own art. I did. I was able to develop my own art privately through years of 'reading the book that is myself' as it were, while making ends meet to support my family. With my commercial work, I was also able to create what is estimated at over 500,000 drawings over the years. This opportunity to draw so often has trained my eye and given my lines an intelligence and focus. Commercial drawing in such high quantities has forced my very strokes to become a language for me that helps me create poetry with them. I love my work.

I was able to develop my personal work through my relationship with my husband who is the musician, song-poet and performer, David Nigel Lloyd. Our relationships to other artists and arts, the opportunities to see art in Los Angeles, and talk together about art has helped with my development as an artist.

I have left commercial work behind and have taken on the traditional role of the artist in society, creating painted works that reflect the people and places around me. I create works as tributes, sometimes publicly, so as to include non artists in the view of the world as beautiful. I have created paintings live before large and small audiences, once creating a painting of a seemingly mundane local news broadcast live on the air during the broadcast. It was a gas. I am on a mission, although I feel a bit of a Don Quixote, to reintroduce the vitality of painting to the community and make a record of our times.
